Abaya, derived from an Arabic word that means ‘cloak’ is more than just a piece of clothing. An abaya, for women, is a sign of modesty, respect, and dignity. This traditional outfit is a symbol of national and cultural identity and is worn by women all over the world.

Traditionally, an abaya is a long, flowing robe-like garment that is worn over clothes. The loosely fitted outerwear goes all the way down to the feet and has long sleeves so the body is fully covered.

Even though the exact date and place of origin of the abaya have been widely debated, it is believed that robes and cloaks like the Abaya have been around for over 4000 years and gradually started becoming more and more popular after the 7th century.

What was once seen as a plain garment that had only one purpose — to conceal, is now embraced by women as an expression of their individuality. abayas (plural) have now become a way for women to showcase their personal style while still staying true to their heritage, culture, and traditions. Gone are the days of simple black abaya that many believed were conforming women to a uniform look, the latest Abaya designs now flaunt a variety of colours, fabrics, embellishments, colours, and more.

Over the years, the abaya evolved from the traditional laff, a black abaya worn by the upper class to stylish experiments made with a variety of flowy fabrics like georgette, chiffon, crepe, etc. It was no longer looked at as just something to cover the body with, it transcended from functionality to a global fashion trend.

The traditional abaya gradually spread outward from the Arab Gulf region and grew popular in Europe, America, and other countries of Asia. Women from a myriad of geographic backgrounds now don the Abaya and it is no longer limited to women from a Gulf background.

Globalization also played a key role in the evolution of the Abaya — it influenced everything, from the design to its productions and distribution. The popularity and influence of western fashion in the Middle East are indisputable and the fashion trends of the west have an undeniable hold on the design of the abaya of today.

Apart from the design, the way abayas are now bought and sold in the Middle East and Gulf countries have also undergone a transformation. abayas were originally made to order by local seamstresses or bought in local souks, an Arab marketplace, or bazaar. Women from smaller towns would travel great distances to get their hands on high-quality abaya from name brands.

The increase in popularity and demand for abayas in the UAE and all over the world sparked growth in designer brands that cater to the needs of abaya-wearing women. Today, these women can shop for the latest abaya designs from the best brands right from the comfort of their homes.

The abaya, which was only looked at as a symbol of faith, is now a beautiful mix of modernity and tradition and has transcended to become a truly global garment.
